Women's Rights and Gender Equality at the International Level
The promotion of women's rights and gender equality is the main aim and area of activity for numerous international organisations and institutions.
Key milestones in this effort include the Convention on the Elimination of All Forms of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW), adopted by the UN General Assembly in 1979, and the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action of 1995, both of which hold significant importance in the area of women’s rights and gender equality at the international level. Additionally, the UN General Assembly adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, including its 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in September 2015. This agenda features a dedicated goal – SDG 5 – aimed at achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls.
